Jennifer Harnett

Jennifer Harnett: Visual Artist

A bit of info about me & my art....

As a self-taught visual artist,

many of my paintings start

with an idea and a general direction,

but rarely finish at that original goal,

they often reveal themselves along the way,

evolving and changing as they progress,

very often surprising me with their finished form.

I like to explore and try new things,

often add collage items and words

to complement, enhance and/or

change the flavour of my work.

'Screaming Poppies' - Mixed Media

I also truly believe the following Paul Gardner quote: "A painting is never finished, it simply stops in interesting places."

To that end, many of my paintings have a sense of being unfinished.

I believe it’s important to leave a little something for the viewer’s imagination to finish.

'To paraphrase the "Dark Night of the Soul"

This was my dark night of the soul,

when I almost lost faith & questioned the meaning of my life,

this is a true representation of my journey through loneliness,

with the light of hope shining through the weeds.

Thank you Corinne & Serpentine Community Gallery for the opportunity

to curate this show & be a part of this amazing gallery!'

"Breaking the Chains of Bondage" series

Acrylic on Torn Cotton Canvas with Chains

Full Series $959 / Smaller artworks are $126 each / Larger pieces are $162 each

Artist Statement: The word bondage comes from the Greek word “douleuo” which means to be a slave to…

literally or figuratively, involuntarily or voluntarily,

a slave in the qualified sense of subjection or subservience.

We have all been in bondage of some kind in our lives, some of us still are. We have become slaves of bondage to a

variety of things in our everyday lives. It can be alcohol, drugs, hate, jealousy, or any other thing that keeps you

separated from the love and inheritance of God. *Excerpt from a sermon by Denis Jones, Pentecostal Sermons on Christian Liberty

‘Fetiche Ordinaire’

Acrylic on canvas

30cm x 40cm

Artist Statement: ‘Fetiche Ordinaire’

translates from French to mean an ‘Ordinary Fetish’...

Garters & stockings tend to be one of

the more accepted, tamer fetishes that people have,

while the submissive/dominant role-playing

is a fairly common one.

I love the fact that although this painting is highly sexual,

nothing is revealed the viewer’s imagination

needs to complete the picture.

'Body of Light'

Mixed Media on Canvas

92cm x 62cm

Artist Statement: A self-portrait done

in conjunction with a Buddhist light meditation,

where you imagine everything

inside your skin dissolving into light.

The lightly sketched hand is empty of colour,

which is representative of when you are to

imagine yourself as completely clear

and transparent, ‘like a mirage’

with no physical sensations at all.

'Desperate Love'

Acrylic on Canvas

101cm x 76cm

'Disposable Beauty'

Acrylic on Canvas

101cm x 76cm

Artist Statement: Created in a heightened state of lustful passion at the tail end of being utterly immersed

in the fun & free wheeling Sydney singles scene…

These paintings offer a frank & honest look at how many of us perceive the sharing of our bodies in today’s society,

where one-night stands are often considered the norm.

'Miss Em'

'Lucy Lu'

'Mistress Devine'

"Reaney Girl Series" - Acrylic

Artist Statement: Vibrant colours have always fascinated me, so it was quite unusual that at the beginning of 2008, I was only painting in B&W. The reintroduction of these passionate colours (dark raspberry & byzantium purple) marks the beginning of an ardent reawakening.

from Scarlet - June 2011
