Historically, the Salon des Refuses

is an exhibition of the works rejected

by the jury of the official Paris Salon.

Amongst the artists at the first exhibition,

held in 1863 by command of Napoleon III,

were Camille Pissarro, Henri Fantin-Latour,

James M. Whistler and Edouard Manet, whose work

'Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe'

was officially regarded as "an affront to taste".
