I'll be your mirror

Mary Adams & Katrina Mathieson - I'll be your mirror

a knitted tribute to Lou Reed and the 40th anniversary of his first Australian tour

On Wednesday August 27 a rather unique show will open at the Serpentine Gallery

- I'll be your mirror - a knitted tribute to Lou Reed and the 40th anniversary of his first Australian tour.

The show is the result of a collaboration between

Mary Adams, a visual artist who now lives in Lismore,

and local photographer Katrina Mathieson.

Mary Adams has worked in the medium of knitting for over 40 years,

producing hand loomed garments in pure wool using a range of images from popular culture.

For 'I'll be your mirror', Mary has produced 50 sweaters representing Lou Reed albums and songs.

Ms Adams said her inspiration to first knit Reed onto a jumper came with the 1972 release of the Transformer album.

"It's one of the most amazing album covers ever made," she said. "That face is so enigmatic.

Is it totally bored? Is it rapturous? Is it full of love? Is it full of sorrow?

It's unbelievable it could be captured just in black and white."

That jumper was bought by a woman who wore it to a press conference with Reed for his first Australian tour

- not long after that the star asked Ms Adams to knit another 20 of them.

The Artists: Mary Adams and Katrina Mathieson

Photographs taken by Ms Mathieson show people modelling the jumpers at locations

such as The Channon Market and Lismore's Back Alley Gallery.

Join us on the 27th August 2014 at 6pm for the opening night.

The exhibition runs from 27th August until 2nd September 2014.

On July 13 2014 the artists took the entire collection of Lou Reed sweaters

out to The Channon Market and set up a mobile studio.

Members of the public were invited to come in, choose a sweater, be photographed in it,

and leave comments in tribute to Lou Reed if they wished.

The wonderful collection of photographs and comments exhibited here are the result of that day.

Once the exhibition finishes in Lismore, it's hitting the road and heading for Sydney,

where it will be displayed at the Tap Gallery from 10-14 September 2014.
