Our Purpose

PURPOSE for the Serpentine Community Gallery

1.     The Serpentine Community Gallery established in Lismore in 2006 is a community based not for profitIncorporated Association run by volunteers.

2.     Its primary purpose is to promote art within the Northern Rivers of NSW and to assist creatives and particularly emerging artists from differing sectors from within the local community to exhibit works and performances through holding exhibitions for the public.

3.     Serpentine aims to provide accessible exhibition space for local artists of various levels of achievement and aims to include many marginalised groups from within the local community.

4.     Serpentine aims to be responsive, filling gaps and is inclusive rather than exclusive 

5.     Serpentine exhibitions aim at being multi modal with varied mediums including: paint, ceramics, sculpture, digital art (including digital projection), fibre and ink, performance, photography and music. 

6.     Serpentine engages volunteers who are inclusive of various abilities and differences.

7.     Serpentine provides a safe space for volunteers for personal and skills development using a strength-based approach to help build confidence and a sense of belonging.  

8.     Serpentine aims to promote art education for all ages within the community 

9.     The assets and income of Serpentine shall be applied solely to further its objects and no portion shall be distributed directly or indirectly to the members of the organisation except as genuine compensation for services rendered or expenses incurred on behalf of the organisation. 

10.   If, upon the winding up or dissolution of Serpentine after the satisfaction of all its debts and liabilities, there remains any property, this property must not be paid to or distributed among the members. Instead, this property must be given or transferred to some other organisation or organisations which is charitable at law:

10.1  with objects similar to, or inclusive of, the objects of Serpentine

10.2  whose constitution prohibits the distribution of its income and      property among its members to an extent at least as great as is imposed on Serpentine under this constitution, and where the remaining property comprises gift funds, the organisation or organisations is or are deductible gift recipients within the meaning of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (Cth)
