Listening to Wom*n
"Listening to Wom*n"
- is a contemporary classical music event being performed
as part of Serpentine Community Gallery's
"Woman - In All Her Forms" exhibition opening
on Friday 10th March 2017.
It features two world premieres, one by local composer Naima Fine
and the other by Melbourne composer Kris Eira,
and recent works by local Lisa Cameron and Melbournite Sam Wolf.
The talented all-women ensemble brings together some of the region's best musicians,
featuring Kate Gittins (Binna Burra) on clarinet; Julie Metcalfe (Lilian Rock) on violin;
Jolanda Moyle (Barker's Vale) on sarangi (indian violin) and voice;
Lisa Cameron (Lismore) on cello; and Naima Fine (Terania Creek) on flute and cello.
Kris Eira is a multidisciplinary composer, performer and linguist based in Melbourne.
Her work explores boundary-crossing using recursive and symbolic structures.
Kris's world premiere is a small suite entitled 'Brilliant in the car park',
exploring the historical holding-back of women mathematicians and intergenerational trauma.
Local Naima Fine is passionate about amplifying voices of the marginalised and unheard.
Her world premiere, 'It's hard to think of anything else', is driven by the distress of living out
a daily life while feminist gains such as abortion are peeled back worldwide, layer by layer.
Naima is excited to be the curator and presenter of this concert,
bringing together feminism, community, and new music.
"Listening to Wom*n" lets us hear classical instruments speak with contemporary voices.
You are invited to listen and experience the sound world of today's composers.
From meditative spaces to political statements, this diverse and engaging concert brings us
the talent of Australian performers and composers with lived experiences of being women.
Composer and ecologist Naima Fine explores
music, ecology, and the spaces between.
She is trying to use her music/ecology meld
to reach out to broader communities.
